Ever wondered what really happens behind the scenes at the Richland Police Department?

The RPD Citizens Academy is your opportunity to step inside the department, meet the people who serve our city, and gain a deeper understanding of how policing works in Richland.

This free, 6-week program is designed to build meaningful connections between community members and the Richland Police Department through education, conversation, and firsthand experience.

The Citizens Academy offers participants an inside look at RPD operations, taught directly by the officers and staff who do the work every day. Each session combines presentations, demonstrations, and open discussion to help participants better understand police practices, decision-making, and community partnerships.

Whether you’re simply curious or looking to become more engaged in your community, the Citizens Academy is designed to inform, connect, and build trust.

Participants may explore topics such as:

• Patrol operations and daily police work

• Investigations and specialty units

• Use of technology and equipment

• Training standards and officer preparation

• Community engagement and outreach efforts

• How RPD works with partner agencies

(Topics may vary by session.)

When:

• Thursdays, 6:00–8:30 PM

• One Saturday morning, 8:00–10:00 AM

• Graduation: 11:00 AM–12:00 PM, followed by a community celebration

Richland Police Department | Training Room

Saturday session will be held at the RPD Range

The Citizens Academy is open to community members who:

• Live or work in Richland AND

• Want to learn more about their police department AND

• Are interested in open dialogue and community connection AND

• Be 18 years of age or older at the time of application

No prior experience or background in law enforcement is required!

• All applicants may be subject to a basic background review

• Class size is limited to maintain an interactive learning environment

• Meeting the eligibility requirements does not guarantee acceptance into the academy
